Troubleshooting

No follow-up after someone accepted

Someone accepted your connection request but never received the next message. Here's how to work out why.

Work through these in order — the first two explain most cases.

1. Has enough time passed?

Two delays stack here:

  • LinkedIn doesn't announce acceptances, so Updately discovers them by checking periodically. Allow a few hours, occasionally up to eight.
  • Then your step's own delay applies. A one-day delay means a day after that discovery.

So a message step set to one day can legitimately arrive a day and a half after the person accepted. If it's been less than that, nothing is wrong.

2. Is the campaign active?

Check the campaign's status. A paused campaign sends nothing.

Campaigns are paused automatically when the connected LinkedIn account disconnects — and they are not switched back on for you when you reconnect. If your account dropped at any point, this is the most likely answer.

After reconnecting LinkedIn, always check that your campaigns and signals are switched back on. Reconnecting restores the account, not the campaigns that were paused because of it.

See LinkedIn account disconnected.

3. Does the campaign have a message step after the invite?

A campaign whose only step is a connection request has nothing to send next. The contact will show as Completed once the invite goes out, which is correct behaviour for that campaign — there just isn't a follow-up configured.

Open the campaign and confirm there's a message step after step 1.

4. Have you hit your sending limit?

If your account has already used its allowance for the day, the message is deferred rather than dropped. Check your usage for the day — if invites and messages together are at the combined cap, the follow-up goes out tomorrow.

See Sending limits and account safety.

5. Is the contact in Error?

Open the contact and look at the last error. A step that failed three times stops being retried. Usual causes are a deleted prospect account or a temporary refusal from LinkedIn.

6. Did they actually accept?

Worth confirming. A pending invite looks very similar to an accepted one from the outside. If the contact is still In progress with no acceptance recorded, they may simply not have accepted yet — most people take days, and many never do.

Still stuck?

Get in touch with the campaign name and the contact's name, and we'll look at what the campaign did and when.

A note on history: if you have contacts that accepted before 30 July 2026 and never received a follow-up, that was a bug on our side, not a configuration problem — acceptances weren't being registered. It's fixed. Contact us and we can move those contacts forward.
